On a recent Windstar Mediterranean cruise, with a map in one hand and my camera in the other, I set out to walk through as much of this celebrated city as I could, before the end of the afternoon. One day in the port of Cannes and you can easily explore much of this seaside hideaway; a glittering, international city on the tropical French Riviera. Cannes was given its name due to the cane reeds that once grew on its shores. Walk along the beach promenade until at least the second small wharf, which on nice days has tables and umbrellas where you can eat and drink (below). You are now in front of the Cannes Intercontinental Carlton Hotel - perhaps the most famous of the Cannes hotels on the street called La Croisette. It is a favourite hotel for movie stars coming for the film festival, and was the main location for the Hitchcock movie "To Catch a Thief". If you’re more of a beach fanatic than a city lover, then you’ll love the sandy beaches lining the coastline of Cannes. Many of the beaches are open to the public and have beach chairs and umbrellas available to rent for the day. A medieval tower of the castle houses Musée de la Castre, an art and ethnography museum well worth visiting if you want to soak up some history and culture of this part of France.
Today, the city is best known for the Cannes Film Festival held each May as well as being a playground for the rich and famous.
